Is Personal Development a Waste of Time?

January 27th, 2009 Comments off

Professor Charcot (left) of Paris' Salpêtrière...[Image via Wikipedia]The title of this blog post might shock you a bit.

Maybe it even offends you.

But this is what some people say so let’s take a look at it and see if it has merit.

There are successful businessmen (and women) who have everything they want and their position in a nutshell is this: “Don’t waste your time with that ‘warm and fuzzy, feel good’ stuff. This world is about setting your mind to something and then moving your arms and legs to get it done. Personal development products are a waste of time.”

Really, this is what they say!

And so maybe you’re putting in all this effort; going to Tony Robbins seminars, buying CDs on hypnosis, and setting goals every January 1st. Meanwhile, you still aren’t where you want to be and these guys are rolling in money and success.

Makes you stop and wonder: is personal development a waste of time?

How else can you explain it? Someone who puts no attention on self improvement and still has success?

Well before you run to the closet and put all your Brian Tracy programs up for auction on eBay, consider this:

Maybe some people ARE studying personal development but they just call it something else.

You see, these same people, if you take a closer look at them, I’m betting you will see that they ARE studying personal development!

If you ask one of them how they grow their business so quickly, they may say something like, “well I take quick, decisive action.” Everyone knows you have to do that to be successful.”

Oh really! And so what makes you so confident in your quick decisions and that they are good ones?

And then they may say something like, “Because I pay attention to small details and I trust my gut.”

Aha! So what they are REALLY saying is that they have practiced the art of listening to their intuition!!!

… personal development, my friend. It’s just being labeled something else. It’s still personal development.

We all need it: If you don’t practice helping yourself, then how the heck are you going to be able to help anyone else along the way? It’s the gatekeeper to where you want to get to.

On a similar note, some say that hypnosis = hogwash.

Now that’s funny because every time I turn on the tv the media is hypnotizing me with their preselected messages.

Be careful of the man or woman who tells you hypnosis is bunk… they may be the one reaching for your credit card next!

So for the record, I am NOT one of the people who is anti- self improvement. In fact, that’s why I’m now going to share a unique website link with you that will not only help you AND others, but in this site are HUNDREDS of Self Help gifts and product downloads all with one aim:

21 Favorite Wealth Quotes

January 26th, 2009 Comments off

Laozi depicted as a Taoist god.[Image via Wikipedia]Sometimes we just need to spend a little more time on getting our thinking straight. Relax a little and quit chasing so hard.

The following are 21 of a few of my favorite wealth and riches quotations…

The rich get richer. Not only because they have surpluses with which to invest, but because of the overriding emotional release they experience from having wealth. -Stuart Wilde

‘Tis a sort of duty to be rich, that it may be in one’s power to do good, riches being another word for power. -Mary Wortley

He who is contented is rich. -Lao Tzu

Planning ahead is a measure of class. The rich and even the middle class plan for future generations, but the poor can plan ahead only a few weeks or days. -Gloria Steinem

It is the mind that maketh good of ill, that maketh wretch or happy, rich or poor. -Edmund Spenser

To suppose as we all suppose, that we could be rich and not behave as the rich behave, is like supposing that we could drink all day and stay sober. -Logan P. Smith

Would that there were an award for people who come to understand the concept of enough. Good enough. Successful enough. Thin enough. Rich enough. Socially responsible enough. When you have self-respect, you have enough. -Gail Sheehy

High achievers spot rich opportunities swiftly, make big decisions quickly and move into action immediately. Follow these principles and you can make your dreams come true. -Robert H. Schuller

There are two types of poor people, those who are poor together and those who are poor alone. The first are the true poor, the others are rich people out of luck. -Jean-Paul Sartre

If your only goal is to become rich, you will never achieve it. -John D. Rockefeller

I don’t think it’s a good attitude in your life to feel that you have to be rich to have self-esteem. -Tom Petty

The man who has no money is poor, but one who has nothing but money is poorer. He only is rich who can enjoy without owning; he is poor who though he has millions is covetous. -Orison Swett Marden

I know why most people never get rich. They put the money ahead of the job. If you just think of the job, the money will automatically follow. This never fails. -Hedy Lamarr

There is a serious defect in the thinking of someone who wants – more than anything else – to become rich. As long as they don’t have the money, it’ll seem like a worthwhile goal. Once they do, they’ll understand how important other things are – and have always been. -Benjamin Jowett

Every man is rich or poor according to the proportion between his desires and his enjoyments. -Samuel Johnson

If you want to achieve your dreams, you must follow them, and the best way to follow them is not to think about wanting to be very rich, but to think about doing something that you really want to do. -Jackie Collins

If we command our wealth, we shall be rich and free; if our wealth commands us, we are poor indeed. -Edmund Burke

I always knew I was going to be rich. I don’t think I ever doubted it for a minute. -Warren Buffett

If you ever get rich and famous, by definition you are special. You have done something special, and therefore you start to behave special. Then if the floor drops out, and you become down and out, you have a really new perspective. -Danny Bonaduce

If you want to know how rich you really are, find out what would be left of you tomorrow if you should lose every dollar you own tonight. -William J. H. Boetcker

Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.
-Oscar Wilde

The Multiplier Effect

January 18th, 2009 2 comments

Boris Kustodiev, Traktir (restaurant) in Mosco...[Image via Wikipedia]The story of the young architect who had just won a big contract explains the multiplier effect beautifully.

He took himself off to his favorite restaurant to celebrate, but, as he sat down, saw a newspaper on the next table – the headline was “Depression predicted”.

He got such a shock that he canceled his meal. When the proprietor asked the reason for the sudden change of heart he replied: “Look at the headline – there is a depression coming. I had better save my money”.

The restaurant owner was so surprised that he rang his wife immediately and said, “There’s a depression coming. Cancel that new dress you have ordered”.

The wife promptly telephoned the dress shop owner and told her that she had to cancel the order because there was a depression on the way.

Naturally this worried the shop owner and, after a quick discussion with her husband, she decided to cancel the building contract for the planned extensions to the dress shop.

She rang the builder to pass on the bad news and the builder immediately decided to cancel all the jobs he had planned for the next year.

His first call was to the young architect, who had started all this off, to tell him his services were no longer required because “a depression is coming”.

Bitterly disappointed, the young man slunk back to the restaurant to drown his sorrows. This time he was in no hurry and picked up the paper that was still lying there.

To his amazement he discovered it was an old paper dated 20 years ago and had been left there by a previous customer who had found it when he was cleaning out old boxes. The “depression” had all been in the young man’s mind, but its effects were as real as if the paper had been printed yesterday.
