Is Personal Development a Waste of Time?

January 27th, 2009 No comments

Professor Charcot (left) of Paris' Salpêtrière...[Image via Wikipedia]The title of this blog post might shock you a bit.

Maybe it even offends you.

But this is what some people say so let’s take a look at it and see if it has merit.

There are successful businessmen (and women) who have everything they want and their position in a nutshell is this: “Don’t waste your time with that ‘warm and fuzzy, feel good’ stuff. This world is about setting your mind to something and then moving your arms and legs to get it done. Personal development products are a waste of time.”

Really, this is what they say!

And so maybe you’re putting in all this effort; going to Tony Robbins seminars, buying CDs on hypnosis, and setting goals every January 1st. Meanwhile, you still aren’t where you want to be and these guys are rolling in money and success.

Makes you stop and wonder: is personal development a waste of time?

How else can you explain it? Someone who puts no attention on self improvement and still has success?

Well before you run to the closet and put all your Brian Tracy programs up for auction on eBay, consider this:

Maybe some people ARE studying personal development but they just call it something else.

You see, these same people, if you take a closer look at them, I’m betting you will see that they ARE studying personal development!

If you ask one of them how they grow their business so quickly, they may say something like, “well I take quick, decisive action.” Everyone knows you have to do that to be successful.”

Oh really! And so what makes you so confident in your quick decisions and that they are good ones?

And then they may say something like, “Because I pay attention to small details and I trust my gut.”

Aha! So what they are REALLY saying is that they have practiced the art of listening to their intuition!!!

… personal development, my friend. It’s just being labeled something else. It’s still personal development.

We all need it: If you don’t practice helping yourself, then how the heck are you going to be able to help anyone else along the way? It’s the gatekeeper to where you want to get to.

On a similar note, some say that hypnosis = hogwash.

Now that’s funny because every time I turn on the tv the media is hypnotizing me with their preselected messages.

Be careful of the man or woman who tells you hypnosis is bunk… they may be the one reaching for your credit card next!

So for the record, I am NOT one of the people who is anti- self improvement. In fact, that’s why I’m now going to share a unique website link with you that will not only help you AND others, but in this site are HUNDREDS of Self Help gifts and product downloads all with one aim:

21 Favorite Wealth Quotes

January 26th, 2009 No comments

Laozi depicted as a Taoist god.[Image via Wikipedia]Sometimes we just need to spend a little more time on getting our thinking straight. Relax a little and quit chasing so hard.

The following are 21 of a few of my favorite wealth and riches quotations…

The rich get richer. Not only because they have surpluses with which to invest, but because of the overriding emotional release they experience from having wealth. -Stuart Wilde

‘Tis a sort of duty to be rich, that it may be in one’s power to do good, riches being another word for power. -Mary Wortley

He who is contented is rich. -Lao Tzu

Planning ahead is a measure of class. The rich and even the middle class plan for future generations, but the poor can plan ahead only a few weeks or days. -Gloria Steinem

It is the mind that maketh good of ill, that maketh wretch or happy, rich or poor. -Edmund Spenser

To suppose as we all suppose, that we could be rich and not behave as the rich behave, is like supposing that we could drink all day and stay sober. -Logan P. Smith

Would that there were an award for people who come to understand the concept of enough. Good enough. Successful enough. Thin enough. Rich enough. Socially responsible enough. When you have self-respect, you have enough. -Gail Sheehy

High achievers spot rich opportunities swiftly, make big decisions quickly and move into action immediately. Follow these principles and you can make your dreams come true. -Robert H. Schuller

There are two types of poor people, those who are poor together and those who are poor alone. The first are the true poor, the others are rich people out of luck. -Jean-Paul Sartre

If your only goal is to become rich, you will never achieve it. -John D. Rockefeller

I don’t think it’s a good attitude in your life to feel that you have to be rich to have self-esteem. -Tom Petty

The man who has no money is poor, but one who has nothing but money is poorer. He only is rich who can enjoy without owning; he is poor who though he has millions is covetous. -Orison Swett Marden

I know why most people never get rich. They put the money ahead of the job. If you just think of the job, the money will automatically follow. This never fails. -Hedy Lamarr

There is a serious defect in the thinking of someone who wants – more than anything else – to become rich. As long as they don’t have the money, it’ll seem like a worthwhile goal. Once they do, they’ll understand how important other things are – and have always been. -Benjamin Jowett

Every man is rich or poor according to the proportion between his desires and his enjoyments. -Samuel Johnson

If you want to achieve your dreams, you must follow them, and the best way to follow them is not to think about wanting to be very rich, but to think about doing something that you really want to do. -Jackie Collins

If we command our wealth, we shall be rich and free; if our wealth commands us, we are poor indeed. -Edmund Burke

I always knew I was going to be rich. I don’t think I ever doubted it for a minute. -Warren Buffett

If you ever get rich and famous, by definition you are special. You have done something special, and therefore you start to behave special. Then if the floor drops out, and you become down and out, you have a really new perspective. -Danny Bonaduce

If you want to know how rich you really are, find out what would be left of you tomorrow if you should lose every dollar you own tonight. -William J. H. Boetcker

Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.
-Oscar Wilde

The Multiplier Effect

January 18th, 2009 2 comments

Boris Kustodiev, Traktir (restaurant) in Mosco...[Image via Wikipedia]The story of the young architect who had just won a big contract explains the multiplier effect beautifully.

He took himself off to his favorite restaurant to celebrate, but, as he sat down, saw a newspaper on the next table – the headline was “Depression predicted”.

He got such a shock that he canceled his meal. When the proprietor asked the reason for the sudden change of heart he replied: “Look at the headline – there is a depression coming. I had better save my money”.

The restaurant owner was so surprised that he rang his wife immediately and said, “There’s a depression coming. Cancel that new dress you have ordered”.

The wife promptly telephoned the dress shop owner and told her that she had to cancel the order because there was a depression on the way.

Naturally this worried the shop owner and, after a quick discussion with her husband, she decided to cancel the building contract for the planned extensions to the dress shop.

She rang the builder to pass on the bad news and the builder immediately decided to cancel all the jobs he had planned for the next year.

His first call was to the young architect, who had started all this off, to tell him his services were no longer required because “a depression is coming”.

Bitterly disappointed, the young man slunk back to the restaurant to drown his sorrows. This time he was in no hurry and picked up the paper that was still lying there.

To his amazement he discovered it was an old paper dated 20 years ago and had been left there by a previous customer who had found it when he was cleaning out old boxes. The “depression” had all been in the young man’s mind, but its effects were as real as if the paper had been printed yesterday.

She Brought The Ocean Home Today

January 11th, 2009 No comments

A photograph of a stream leading into the San ...Wikipedia

She put the shell against her ear.
Then rising from her knee,
She closed her eyes,
and, pressing hard,
She listened for the sea.

I knew she heard the water roar;
She glowed with childish pride.
To hold the ocean in her hand
Was more than she could hide.

She ran across the sand to me;
I listened for awhile
Then tucked the shell within her hand
And nodded with a smile.

I thought that she could learn from me,
But who am I to tell?
She brought the ocean home today;
I only brought a shell.

Wake Up Your Life!

January 9th, 2009 3 comments

Wake Up Your LifeWhat would you do if you had three major relationships in your life and the same woman interfered in all three of them? How would you handle it?

This is what happened to Doris Roper. First, her husband of two years fell in love with this woman (*Candy) and in the midst of trying to decide what to do about it, Doris fell pregnant with her first child and the decision was made to continue with the marriage.

More than 5 years later, the marriage ended in a very difficult divorce, and Doris entered her next major relationship with *Dick. Two years into this relationship, Doris discovered that he was cheating on her with Candy.

Shocked and devastated, this became the starting point of an inner journey that woke up her life.

The growth and insights gained as a result of her experiences, put Doris where she is today—with a fabulous marriage, a challenging and fulfilling profession, and a story that inspires and motivates other women to follow her example.

WAKE UP your life! combines Doris’s story with sage insights about how to turn on your life’s alarm clock and get going in the direction of aliveness and fulfillment. In these pages, Doris tells her “one of a kind” story about the day her life crashed down around her and what she did about it.

Doris Roper is touring in January to promote her book WAKE UP Your Life!

Read on for more details >>

doris-roper-wit instituteDoris is also the founder of The W.I.T. Institute, an educational and support organization for women to master their financial lives. Doris helps women to change their belief systems about life, money and success as she knows that it’s their limiting beliefs that keep so many women from being successful.

Achieve More And Have More Fun

January 8th, 2009 No comments

The Wheel Of LifeThere is a wonderful new movie in town, and I know you will be hearing a lot more about the thrilling work being done at The Wheel Of Life. It is a definite ‘must see’!

What if everything you believe about life, is wrong?

Announcing the exciting new life-changing film – The Wheel Of Life

This documentary is a compilation of 18 leading experts in health, wellness and personal development, showing you how to finally create tangible improvements in all key areas of your life.

You’ll benefit from a cast of experts in human potential, optimum health, whole food nutrition, spirituality and more. Your teachers have collectively written award-winning books, appeared on TV across the world, spoken to and coached millions of people…

No matter who you are – your age, sex or income – this documentary will show you exactly how to improve each one of the 8 key areas represented on your Wheel Of Life so you can enjoy better health, attract more wealth, clear away more blockages, experience more intimacy, achieve more and have more fun.

The Wheel Of Life is an ancient piece of wisdom that has the power to guide you to a fuller, richer experience of life in today’s world. The Wheel has been found in all cultures across the world and represents the balance of all things and the eternal cycle of life.

It expresses the truth that your life is always in flux and moving in cycles. For example, you will go from sad to happy, from fear to peace, and from poor to rich. Whatever stage you are at is all part of the cycle of life and will contribute to your growth and evolution as a person.

Wheel Of Life expert Daniel Johnston tells a story about a scientific researcher who noticed a young butterfly trying desperately to emerge from its cocoon. He decided to help the process along and used a sharp blade to cut open the cocoon to help the butterfly get out. However, when the butterfly emerged, it was unable to fly. Its wings had not been strengthened by the process of breaking through the cocoon. The butterfly soon died because it lacked the power to take flight.

A copy of the Struggling Butterfly Story

The moral of the story is that every phase of the wheel of your life serves a purpose and ultimately supports your evolution, growth and personal development. Your life has many different parts, each in different stage of their own cycle. By understanding where you are now and how to bring these cycles into harmony you can improve the level of success, happiness and fulfilment you experience every day.

Take a look at this movie The Wheel Of Life, for yourself.

Mistaking Hard work With Long Hours?

January 7th, 2009 1 comment

Royalties UniversityHard work is thinking past what you can see and choosing to create what you want to see. Who knows your business better than you? The hard work begins when we’re no longer willing to accept a paycheck for delivering the status quo, the expected.

We mistake hard work with long hours and measure it by the time we put in rather than by the results we produce. By results I mean producing those things that are not so obvious like a new process that will save your company time and money. The hard work comes in when you dedicate time into making a better product or developing an idea that will change the course of your business.

If you are someone who sits in front of a big blank white surface and are required to create something out of nothing, you know what hard work is. Hard work is not always obvious.

“Hard work is about risk. Hard work is about training yourself to leap over this barrier, tunnel under that barrier, drive through the other barrier.” -Seth Godin

Life Power Tip #485

January 7th, 2009 3 comments

Consider how you use language to interpret the things surrounding you each day.

How do you think the cells of your body might logically respond to the words: I am starving? What image does that conjure? Would it cause a shift in the cellular and chemical response of your body if instead, you were to tone that down, and use the words: I am hungry? New words, new pictures, evoking empowering emotions.
